Homemade Tinted Lip Balm Recipe

Several tubes of homemade tinted chap stick

Making your own lip balm at home is a simple, satisfying way to ensure you’re using only the best ingredients to care for your lips. Store-bought lip balms often contain a mix of synthetic chemicals and fragrances that can irritate or dry out your skin. By making lip balm from scratch, you can customize the formula to suit your specific needs, avoid unwanted additives, and ensure you know exactly what you’re putting on your body. Plus, it’s a fun DIY project that doesn’t take much time or effort.

One of the key ingredients in many homemade lip balm recipes is beeswax, and for good reason. Beeswax acts as a natural barrier that helps lock in moisture and protect lips from environmental factors like wind and cold weather. It also has properties that can promote healing and soothe irritated skin. Combined with nourishing apricot oil, which is rich in vitamins A and E, your lips will receive deep hydration and protection. Apricot oil is known for its lightweight, non-greasy texture, making it ideal for sensitive skin while providing a soft, smooth finish.

Opting for clean, homemade beauty products also means you’re reducing your exposure to harmful chemicals commonly found in conventional beauty products. When you make things from scratch, you have control over the ingredients, ensuring they’re natural and free from harsh preservatives or artificial fragrances. This approach not only supports healthier skin but also aligns with a more sustainable, eco-conscious lifestyle. By taking the time to craft your own lip balm, you’re embracing a more intentional and holistic approach to personal care.

This recipe starts with apricot oil and alkanet root powder. The alkanet root powder is used to dye the apricot oil with alkanet root powder and give it a natural red tint.

Alkanet root powder and rosemary

As a note you can experiment with different types of oils to see what you like best, some options you can use that you may already have at home are sweet almond oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil or any oils that are soothing to chapped lips.

Allow apricot oil and alkanet root powder to heat over the double boiler for about 15 minutes until the oil has been dyed. You can check if its ready buy taking a small amount of the oil out onto a spoon and see if you can see the color in a thin layer of oil. You can also rub a small amount on the back of your hand and see if there is a slight tint.

Strain the alkanet root powder from the oil through muslin cloth and allow the oil to cool slightly before squeezing out excess to get out all the oil.

Return the oil to the double boiler and add grated beeswax. You can grate the beeswax yourself with a regular cheese grater. Add the beeswax to the oil and it to melt.

Beeswax melting in apricot oil

Once completely melted, take a small amount of oil onto a spoon and place it in the refrigerator for about one minute to make sure it hardens to the right consistency. If not add a little bit more beeswax.

When you have reached the right consistency, take off the heat and add in peppermint and rosemary essential oils, or any oil of your choosing. Pour the mixture into chapstick tubes or tins and allow to harden. Once it has set completely it is ready to use!
