The Truth About Herbs From China

Sometimes it is very easy for alarming and non-optimum things to completely overshadow the good. Can you think of some examples? They abound. 

Have you ever worked really hard at something and had so many things go right and the one thing you didn’t get quite right, was the thing everyone remembered?

I don’t know what it is, but the negative seems to have a lot more sticking power in the mind than the positive. It is probably because it seems dangerous to not pay attention to the bad things, because they can get you. Threatening things demand our attention.

Let’s take China. China’s history is a source of ancient wisdom from Philosophy and Religion to Medicine and Agriculture. It has given the world many things still in use today like paper, printing and paper money, decimal mathematics, umbrellas and wheelbarrows. It has contributed to modern agriculture having invented the first plow blade, invented shipping and had the first astronomy observatories.  The Chinese have even invented the game of chess among many, many other things.  A major invention from China is Traditional Chinese Medicine which contains written observations about how herbs work going back 2500 years! And the majority of those herbs are from China.

 

It is rather recent history that China has been any kind of threat to the peace of the world. Before that it was actually a symbol of peace and wisdom. Government may seize control of governmental things, but that doesn’t mean they can change a people instantly. A people can always disagree, and they usually do.  China’s culture has been under governmental attack since the Mao era, 1949 - 1976, which sought to erode traditional values.  And then the Chinese Communist Party known as the CCP took over as recently as 1978. 

So, it is not hard to see why all of the GOOD of China that is still existing could be totally missed while the attention is on the suppressive influence to that good.

No matter what country you are in, positive and helpful people can and should stick together to support each other. 

But how do you differentiate between the well-meaning and the more modern mass market, “don’t care anything about you”, profit making machine? Mass market products can be GMO and often have high levels of heavy metals like lead and arsenic and have pesticide residues. They also lack the potency and flavor and therapeutic properties that you would buy an herb for.  Mass market, by the way, doesn't just exist in China. There are great companies and bad companies in every country.

Well, I’m afraid one would have to somehow observe. Judging before you even look is called prejudice. It is much easier to generalize, but just think how wrong you can go in doing that. Many examples of prejudice going very awry abound as well. I am sure you can think of some.

At Herbal Roots our goal is to source the best and purest wherever we can find it. We are 100% determined to bring you herbs of the highest quality and purity. Cost is always secondary to this.

The way Herbal Roots determines whether or not to use a vendor is through our rigorous vendor qualification program. This is done through our supplier. Regardless of the country, all vendors must complete a vendor audit. 

They must supply the necessary information to confirm several Key Performance Indicators. This is known as KPIs. A KPI is a quantifiable measure of performance over time for a specific objective. We are interested in, of course, quality, but we also want to know that they have their papers and records in order and follow an organized plan so they don’t make mistakes. They have to be following Good Practices and have good documentation, certifications, and other valid business details.

Regardless of the country we source from, we only source high quality, organic certified herbs that we test for heavy metals, and we do not use the supplier if the heavy metals test fails, revealing high levels. 

We don’t even have to label any of our products with prop 65 labels. Our herbs contain even lower levels than that extremely strict criteria. A good many supplement companies do have to put a prop 65 label on their products even though they claim to have the same or less than the food sold in the supermarket, which they claim is exempt from the labeling requirement. We look for as close to zero as possible, not just to the standard “acceptably safe” amount. Our products are all non-GMO as well.

In addition to this rigorous vetting, when all ingredients arrive to us they are immediately quarantined and thoroughly tested against the incoming paperwork for confirmation before they are allowed to move on to production to be put into our products in manufacturing. 

This is part of our cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practice) manufacturing process and it allows us to maintain a high quality finished product for you, our customer, regardless of the country of origin.

Now it shouldn’t be surprising that so much of the time the best herb quality at the best price would be found in China. Their whole ancient tradition of medicine revolves around herbs and they have the right climate to grow them, which they have been doing for thousands of years. China is a huge part of the Organic herb supply chain. 

There are some ingredients that are not readily available from anywhere but China. But we also don’t ONLY source from China. Some herbs were found by our supplier to be of higher quality from other countries.

The quality of the herb is the determination of where we source from.
