Prebiotic Stewed Apples

Share
Stewed apples is a simple yet delicious dish that brings out the natural sweetness and warmth of the fruit. Not only do stewed apples fill your home with a delightful aroma, but they also come with incredible health benefits. When apples are cooked, they release a compound called pectin, a type of soluble fiber that serves as a prebiotic. Prebiotics play an essential role in gut health by nourishing beneficial bacteria in your digestive system, promoting a balanced microbiome and supporting overall digestion. So, with each bite of these stewed apples, you’re not only treating your taste buds but also supporting your gut health!
Now, let’s talk a little more about the powerful benefits of prebiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible fibers that serve as food for the good bacteria in your gut. These bacteria help break down food, absorb nutrients, and regulate your immune system. Including prebiotics in your diet helps maintain a healthy gut microbiome, which is linked to better digestion, improved mood, and a stronger immune system. When you make stewed apples, you’re creating a naturally prebiotic-rich dish that gives your gut the love it deserves!
As an added bonus, this recipe includes a touch of Ceylon cinnamon, a fragrant spice that enhances both flavor and nutrition. Ceylon cinnamon, often referred to as “true cinnamon,” contains a variety of health benefits, including its ability to regulate blood sugar levels and promote heart health. Unlike the more common Cassia cinnamon, Ceylon cinnamon contains much lower levels of coumarin, a compound that can be harmful in large quantities. The addition of Ceylon cinnamon in your stewed apples not only boosts the taste but also supports brain function and may even help manage cholesterol levels. So, you’re not just making a delicious treat—you’re boosting your health in the process!
Prebiotic Apple Stew Recipe
This recipe is incredibly simple, since most of the process is allowing the apples to sit on the stove. To start, Chop your apples into even, bite-sized pieces. This will ensure they all cook through at the same time.

Add coconut oil into a large pot or pan on medium heat. Add two cinnamon sticks, about five cloves, all of your apples and a splash of lemon juice.
Turn the heat to medium low and allow this all to cook together. Slowly the apples will start to break down and become soft. This is when the prebiotic compound pectin is being released, so this is the most important part!
Allow these to sit on the stove, stirring periodically, until they reach your desired texture. I like them with still a little bit of shape to them but you can also cook them all the way down until almost applesauce! It is totally based on preference.

After that, take this off the stove. You can add these to your probiotic yogurt for a pre- and probiotic combo! Or enjoy over oatmeal, as a side dish, or by themselves!
